Ballet Brazos' 8th annual production of The Nutcracker features professional dancers, guest artists from Texas, and pre-professional performers from across the Brazos Valley. Behind the scenes, ballet instructors representing many area schools work with the dancers for months to rehearse and perfect choreography. Our production features beautiful costumes, sets, and scenery. Under the direction of Suzanne Moreau and Diana Wilcox, and guided by Artistic Advisor Katy Ellison and Theatrical Advisor Andrew Roblyer, the dancers of Ballet Brazos bring you the ballet world's time-honored holiday tradition that brings together young and old for an evening of magic and enchantment. Come travel to the Land of the Sweets and celebrate the magic with us!

This year marks Ballet Brazos' 8th Annual Nutcracker Ballet, proof that collaboration is a wonderful way to allow dancers, teachers, and audiences to experience the wonder of classical ballet. Dancers for our productions are cast by auditions open to the entire Bryan-College Station community and by guest professional ballet dancers.

Note from the Artistic Advisor

Congratulations to the more than 100 performers who have been cast in the 8th annual Ballet Brazos production of The Nutcracker! We are excited to welcome you to the Ballet Brazos family, and we look forward to the time we'll spend together in rehearsals and on the stage.

Performing in The Nutcracker is a rite of passage for ballet dancers everywhere. Many a ballet career has been launched as a tiny mouse scampers on stage past a growing Christmas tree and thinks, "This is what I want to do! There has never been a moment more magical than this!"

It is our hope that in the coming months, you will find your technique improving through the rehearsal process, that you will make new friendships, and develop a life-long desire to be a part of the performing arts. But most of all, we hope that when you step onto the stage in December, you feel the rush that so many before you have felt, and think, "There has never been a moment more magical than this!"

With admiration,
Miss Katy (former Mouse, Sugar Plum Fairy, and everything in between)

Auditions will be held for Act I Party Parents. Ballet Brazos is looking for adults who have theatre and/or dance experience. Focus of Party Parents will be placed on performance, characterization, and storytelling in the style of ballet. Please read the checklist of audition requirements and benefits of participation carefully. Once you have verified that you are eligible to audition and can fulfill the requirements of a Ballet Brazos performer, please use the online registration process, which is the preferred method, or register at auditions.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the audition to turn in your registration forms and headshots and to complete the registration process. Auditions are closed and may not be observed by those not auditioning.

PARTY PARENT REQUIREMENTS

Please read the checklist of audition requirements and benefits of participation carefully. AGE, EXPECTATIONS, & ROLES

Checkbox_Red.jpg
Only those 17+ will be considered for the role of Party Parents.

What we're looking for:

We are primarily seeking performers who can inhabit a character in a manner that is appropriate for a ballet performed in a large venue. There will be dancing involved, but that is secondary for party parents. Particular levels or types of dance experience are not required, though all performers should be comfortable moving and dancing with a person of another gender.
Checkbox_Red.jpg
What to expect at the audition:
  • You don’t need to prepare anything in advance!
  • The audition is essentially a small ballroom-style class, where you will be partnered with various other auditioners
  • Certain combinations will be accompanied with direction for character and acting choices
  • You may be asked to perform certain combinations either with your partner, or in small groups.
  • And that’s it! It’ll be fun and relaxed!
Checkbox_Red.jpg
We currently plan to cast the following roles:
  • 6 Party Parent Male/Female Couples
  • Mr. Stahlbaum, Clara’s Father
  • Mrs. Stahlbaum, Clara’s Mother
  • Grandpa
  • Uncle Drosselmeyer Understudy (to perform at the 2pm show on Saturday, December 14th and receive priority consideration for the full role of Drosselmeyer in 2020)
  • The roles of Grandma and Uncle Drosselmeyer have been pre-cast
Checkbox_Red.jpg
Casting is not guaranteed at Ballet Brazos. We have seen an increase in the abilities of our performers and the number of performers who audition. We are so thankful for this wonderful development, and it also means we may not have roles for all who audition.
Checkbox_Red.jpg
The party scene this year is undergoing a significant update. The structure of the scene may be dramatically different from previous years, and much more focus will be placed on performance, characterization, and storytelling in the style of ballet. While we encourage those who have participated in the past to audition, we also welcome and encourage those who have not participated to consider auditioning as well!

AUDITION PHOTOS & RESUME

Checkbox_Red.jpg
Dancers must submit a headshot at auditions. The photos do not need to be professional photographs and will not be returned. Please submit 3x5, 4x6, or 8x10 color photos with a plain background, such as in a dance studio.

Performance resumes are welcome but not required.

ATTIRE: AUDITIONS, REHEARSALS, PERFORMANCES

Checkbox_Red.jpg
Performers should wear appropriate attire to rehearsals. This includes a comfortable shirt, blouse, or leotard, and pants, shorts, or leggings that are easy to move in. Logos and lettering on shirts should be appropriate for all audiences.

Ladies other than Grandma should wear character shoes or simple pumps/high heels. If cast, please be aware that you may be asked to purchase a pair of black character shoes if you do not already have them.

Men should wear dress shoes, with the exception of Drosselmeyer, who may be asked to purchase jazz shoes.

Checkbox_Red.jpg
Dancers who wear glasses will be asked to not wear glasses on stage if they are able to dance safely without them or wear contacts. Glasses can reflect stage lights and cause distractions for audience members. In addition, glasses can fall off during performances causing a hazard for other dancers. If a dancer must wear glasses on stage, please notify the Ballet Brazos Board within two weeks of casting to discuss acceptable stage options.

CASTING

Checkbox_Red.jpg
Dancers will have the opportunity to indicate which roles they are willing to accept during registration. Dancers must accept the role offered, or decline being part of the performance. The casting will be announced at or before August 26th, at noon. Dancers declining a role must do so by August 27, at midnight, or they will be ineligible to audition the following year.

FEES & VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT

Checkbox_Red.jpg
Party Parents will not be charged a rehearsal fee or provide a volunteer. However, participating in this capacity does not count toward the volunteer requirement for any dancers who are cast in the rest of the show.
