Ballet Brazos' 8th annual production of The Nutcracker features professional dancers, guest artists from Texas, and pre-professional performers from across the Brazos Valley. Behind the scenes, ballet instructors representing many area schools work with the dancers for months to rehearse and perfect choreography. Our production features beautiful costumes, sets, and scenery. Under the direction of Suzanne Moreau and Diana Wilcox, and guided by Artistic Advisor Katy Ellison and Theatrical Advisor Andrew Roblyer, the dancers of Ballet Brazos bring you the ballet world's time-honored holiday tradition that brings together young and old for an evening of magic and enchantment. Come travel to the Land of the Sweets and celebrate the magic with us!

AGE & DANCE EXPERIENCE

NEW AGE REQUIREMENTS FOR AUDITIONS

Due to the interest in this production and the number of available roles in our cast, in 2019 the age cut-off to audition will increase to 8 years old. Auditioning dancers must turn 8 years old by September 1, 2019.

Exceptions

Dancers who will be 7 years old by September 1, 2019 and were cast in Nutcracker 2018 are eligible to audition for Nutcracker 2019. *Cast dancers do not include Little Brother and Little Sister roles.

Participating studio owners/directors will have the opportunity to nominate a select number of 7 year olds to audition. ***Please do NOT approach studio owners/directors about a nomination. The studio owners/directors will let nominated dancers know they have been nominated.***

In summary, 7 year old dancers are only eligible to audition this season if they were previously cast in the Nutcracker 2018 (this does NOT include dancers who were Little Brother and Little Sister roles) OR are a nominated dancers from a participating studio.

Casting is not guaranteed at Ballet Brazos. We have seen an increase in the abilities of our dancers and the number of dancers who audition. We are so thankful for this wonderful development, and it also means we may not have roles for all who audition. Please encourage your dancers to do their best and have fun.

In order to increase your chances of earning a place in our production we strongly recommend the following:

Age Years of Ballet Training Hours of Ballet Training Per Week
8-9 1 1 to 1.5
10-12 2 3

All Ballet Brazos Dancers must adhere to the attendance policy. All Ballet Brazos rehearsals are required. To host a production of this kind, dancers must be willing to commit to the entire schedule. Only two missed studio rehearsals will be excused. This excludes all rehearsals the week of the performance. Please do not audition if there are conflicts with school, sports, or family engagements.

If a dancer has missed two rehearsals and will need to miss another rehearsal, for any reason, the dancer may choose to pay a fine of $50 or be dismissed from Ballet Brazos. If a dancer misses more than three rehearsals, their roles will be recast.

The Ballet Brazos Board may see cases where extenuating circumstances were present on a case by case basis. AT NO TIME, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, SHOULD A DANCER, FAMILY MEMBER OF THE DANCER, OR GUARDIAN CONTACT THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS CONCERNING ABSENCES OF DANCERS.

1.
In the Event of Dancer Injury: If a dancer is injured, the dancer is required to attend rehearsals to observe the class.
2.
In the Event of Dancer Illness and Contagious: If a dancer is ill and considered contagious, and has not yet missed a rehearsal, this will count as one excused absence. If the dancer has already missed two rehearsals, they will need to pay the fine for missing the third rehearsal. If they have already missed three rehearsals, their roles will be recast. In extenuating circumstances, the Ballet Brazos Board may consider the case.
3.
In the Event of Dancer Illness and NOT Contagious: If a dancer is ill and NOT considered contagious, the dancer should attend the rehearsal and observe the class.
4.
Late Policy: Dancers should arrive 10-15 minutes PRIOR to their scheduled dance time. If a dancer is 10 minutes late to rehearsals, they are considered tardy. Two late arrivals/early departures will count as one absence. Four late arrivals/early departures will count as one absence and one $50 fine. After five late arrivals/early departures, the roles will be recast.
