Shohei Iwahama

Arabian

Shohei Iwahama is a dancer, choreographer, and instructor based in Houston, TX. He began dancing under the tutelage of Miyako Kato in Tokyo and eventually performed for her company, Miyako Kato Dance Space. In 2006-2007, he studied at The Ailey School in NYC, under a one-year grant from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan. In 2009, he relocated to Texas to attend Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and received his BFA in Dance in 2012. While attending SHSU, he started performing professionally with NobleMotion Dance (NMD) as one of their founding members. With NMD, he also appeared in the New York Times Bestseller photography book, Dancers Among Us by Jordan Matter. After graduating from SHSU, he joined Hope Stone Dance in Houston and eventually performed his favorite solo Suspicious Fisherman choreographed by Jane Weiner. In 2014, Shohei relocated to Minneapolis, MN where he performed with James Sewell Ballet for four seasons. In 2019, he just returned from Minneapolis to pursue his MFA at his alma mater, SHSU. Shohei has also performed with Aimed Dance, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, Earthen Vessels (Sandra Organ Dance Company), FrenetiCore, Minnesota Dance Theatre, Minneapolis Ballet Dancers, and many other independent choreographers in the United States and Japan. Shohei was named one of Houston Press’ 100 Creatives for 2013 and a recipient of the Minnesota SAGE Award 2015 as an Outstanding Dance Performer.
